SELF-CHECK SCHEDULING AND DIRECT CONNECT TO TELEHEALTH PROFESSIONALS.

The Keep A Breast app focuses on information, support, and, most importantly, access. For the first time, a breast self-check app now connects users who think they may have discovered something during their check with a telehealth medical professional via our partnership with Carbon Health, a technology-enabled healthcare provider that combines smart technology with inviting clinics and a robust virtual offering. This means you’ll have direct, instantaneous support in the case you find something that is not normal to your self-check.

We advocate for the self-check as we’ve so commonly come in contact with young women who have found their own lumps (both benign and malignant) “by accident.” With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected (according to the John Hopkins Medical Center), establishing what is "normal" for you is crucial to knowing your body and creating awareness of when something is wrong.

NEW & IMPROVED FEATURES:

  • Step-by-step self-check tutorial featuring animated gifs

  • Robust scheduling feature based on your menstrual cycle (we have tips if you don’t have one, too!)

  • Breast health resources and information

  • Direct connection to virtual care via Carbon Health

  • Stories from breast cancer survivors

  • Rewards for users who check themselves monthly

  • In-app sharing feature

ABOUT SELF CHECKS

“At Keep A Breast, we want young people to understand and be educated that breast cancer under 40 is a reality,” says Shaney jo Darden, Founder of Keep A Breast. “It can happen to anyone, not just your mom or grandmother. It’s so important to know what is ‘normal’ for you and your body, and checking yourself is the first way to becoming your own health advocate.”

– Shaney jo Darden, Founder/CCO of Keep A Breast

“Despite the deferred healthcare phenomenon occurring now, we firmly believe that self-care and self-checks should not be deferred. Self-checks are an important tool that serves as a first line of defense in detecting breast cancer, and the main barrier to accessing this critical tool is lack of education and awareness. Keep A Breast has been working hard for twenty years to solve that gap, and Carbon Health is proud to work together in providing seamless care to those who may need it. In these times when anxiety levels are already high due to the pandemic, it’s understandable that people may be afraid to face whatever they find on a self-check. Our providers at Carbon Health are here to talk through any concerns someone may have as a result of their self-check, so they are not left to wonder and worry.”

“The average woman has a 12% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Many factors affect this, including family history, breast density, diet, weight, pregnancies, and breastfeeding - the list goes on. While we, as clinicians, can use tools to make estimates regarding your personal risk and are trained at knowing normal from abnormal breast masses, you should know your body as well. Ask your primary care doctor or gynecologist to talk you through their findings when they perform your breast exam, so you are aware of any normal feeling lumps or bumps, as we all have them! That way, you will know if something doesn’t feel right. Early detection of breast cancer increases the chance for cure, especially in young women who aren’t undergoing routine screening.”

LOVE YOUR BODY

We understand, the idea of a self-check can be scary. During your monthly self-check, you are never “looking for cancer” but rather getting to know your body - which is a crucial component of your mental and physical health.

We always tell people to start their self-check from a place of love. Look in the mirror. Your body is beautiful and your breasts are perfect just the way they are. All boobs are perfect - seriously.

EARLY DETECTION

The rate of breast cancer death is decreasing. It has declined by 40 percent over the past few decades. The reason? Early detection. While many focus on mammography and other such medical testing, doing a routine self-check can play in survival. Self-checks are especially important for young people as generally, women do not start getting mammograms until the age of 40, creating the illusion that breast cancer only affects women 40 and older.

CARBON HEALTH

Let’s talk about access!

We dreamed of partnering with a healthcare provider that we could directly connect users to if they discovered any changes during their self-check. That’s where Carbon Health came in.

At KAB, we’re all about breast health for all. When we saw Carbon Health’s mission is to provide personal and accessible healthcare for everyone…well, it was a dream come true. This is exactly who we had been looking for.

Being able to connect you directly with a doctor during this challenging time is an honor and privilege. We hope to help guide you to the best care and resources possible. Multiple members of the KAB team have been patients of Carbon Health so we can personally attest to their level of holistic care. We felt heard, cared for, and supported by their incredible team. We’re delighted to be able to help provide such care to our users!

…if someone feels something is concerning,
they need to advocate for themselves, because
the earlier we catch breast cancer, the much
higher likelihood that we can cure it.
