June 15, 2005, San Diego, CA — The Keep A Breast Foundation, a nonprofit breast cancer awareness organization, today announced it raised £18, 000 (approximately $35,000) for UK-based charity the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care during a benefit at Roxy Jam UK in Perranporth, Cornwall on May 22. The auction showcased 22 one-of-a-kind plaster forms of women’s torsos (including pro surfers Lisa Andersen, Megan Abubo, Layne Beachley and Rochelle Ballard) customized by international artists and designers. The top-selling cast sold for £1,050 and featured a surf scene painted by Michelle Dini on the cast of top surfer Rochelle Ballard. Also bringing in £1,000 apiece were casts painted by official Roxy Jam UK artist Lucy McLaughlan, top designer Maharishi and Roxy girl Shannon McIntyre. Other casts were customized by top designers, Betty Jackson, Ben de Lisi, Kyri and Zakee Shariff. "It's fantastic to be associated with Keep A Breast,” said Geoff Sykes, Roxy UK Marketing Manager. “We brought this event to the UK to generate community awareness and give something back to the area. This event has been one to remember." Roxy and Keep A Breast have partnered on many international breast cancer fundraising benefits in the past, including Roxy Pro Hawaii in November 2004, where over $22,000 was raised for the Kapiolani Breast Center and the Rell Sunn Fund. The two organizations also joined forces for the inaugural Keep A Breast event at Roxy Surf Jam France last year. "Keep A Breast has created an approachable way to talk about something serious,” said Maritxu Darrigrand, Marketing Director for Roxy Youth. “We want to keep on supporting this endeavor because it works. It is always good to bring something fresh to a new place." The funds raised on behalf of the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care will be used to increase breast cancer awareness among young people and benefit education programs in the UK. "We are really delighted that the Roxy Jam auction in association with Keep A Breast was such a fantastic success. The auction has made a wonderful contribution to the information and support for younger women which is funded by the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care. This is the only fund in the UK dedicated to addressing the particular needs of this age group, and so we are really grateful to everyone who supported this amazing event." Said James Fletcher at the Lavender Trust. According to Shaney Jo Darden, Founder of Keep A Breast, "I am extremely grateful to Roxy and the Roxy girls for their dedication and support in making this event possible. Their efforts have helped to raise thousands of pounds for grassroots organizations around the world working to educate young people about breast cancer." - ENDS - For more information about The Keep A Breast Foundation, visit www.keep-a-breast.org.
