Volunteers speak out about KAB on Warped Tour!
Sunday, July 26th, 2009
Here at Keep A Breast, we are lucky to have some amazing volunteers come out to help us. I am so fortunate to meet the people I do and they truly are what keeps us going during these long hot days. It’s such a revitalizing thing to have new people come out every day and pump us up with energy-just when I think I’ve lost my voice completely, some awesome volunteer shows up that keeps me laughing all day.
A few years ago, I met three awesome girls, Gail, Ellen, and Jenna at a Warped show, even before I worked for Keep A Breast. The girls were super passionate about the cause and were already heading to a bunch of Warped dates so I asked them if they’d like to volunteer. This was all before Twitter obviously…volunteers were a lot harder to find and keep track of
Along the way, we’ve had some crazy adventures and they’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty for KAB. Here’s what they have to say about their time with Keep A Breast:
It all began Warped ‘07 when we walked into the Girlz Garage… We met Katie, chatted a bit, well, chatted for awhile and mentioned that we were going to a couple more dates. Katie needed volunteers and we offered to help out. That summer we helped out at all of the tables in the Girlz Garage.
We kept in touch with Katie and Erica and the next summer decided it would be really fun to go to a bunch of dates. We ended up going to 10 dates between Philadelphia and Chicago, where we’re from. We had so much fun last year that this year we added on 2 more dates and expanded the trip all the way down to Florida.
A trip like this is a lot of hard work. We drive long distances and sleep when we can, but we keep coming back because we love it. Our days generally include set up and tear down, spending the better part of the day handing out information and selling a t-shirt or two. We also catch a band’s set every so often.
We love Katie, Erica, everyone at KAB, and everyone who works in the Girlz Garage. Every year we meet awesome people and see new things. Being surrounded by music is great and Warped Tour rocks every year, no matter the lineup. Most of all, we like helping a cause that we all believe in and have personal experiences with. It’s the highlight of the summer because summer would not be summer without the Warped Tour and Keep A Breast.

Warped Tour blog from Baptiste w/ love…

A few word from Baptiste from KAB on the Vans Warped Tour.
This is the story of 2 people that don’t know each other that have been working for a couple of years for the same foundation, but not in the same places. Katie and Baptiste are those two kids. The foundation is Keep A Breast. I am so glad I got to meet so many new people, such a cool feeling, and I love the fact of doing something that I consider being really good for Breast Cancer Awareness.
After four weeks on the road, I am still enjoying everything. From the reactive and positive attitude kids have toward Breast Cancer education, to the cool shows I get to see everyday, to such cool bands such as 3oh!3, Chiodos… wearing our tees, making educational videos, and spreading the KAB love all around. And I have to say as a French guy, American people are cool, and girls are way too cute for me haha.
I really like sharing ideas, try to educate people so please, everyone, come and meet Katie and I at one of the upcoming Vans Warped Tour venues
. Get some cool stuff such as bracelets, tees, necklaces, stickers… knowing that the money you spend goes toward something good and important. We all know that awareness and education are the keys for a more healthy life for young people. Prevention is part of the cure. Warped Tour 09 is a way for us to spread the word about it!
Love you guys

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009Once this tour gets into full effect, (which it is!) it’s easy to forget the
purpose of being here. Hearing the same bands every single day and setting
up the same stuff, seeing the same people every day it turns into a routine.
That’s why when I get the chance to talk to people at the tent who have
personally been affected by breast cancer, it reminds me why it’s so
important to be educating every young person that comes out to Warped Tour.
The primary reason we’re all here is for the music-but if you look a little
bit further there is so many progessive ways to get involved with different
organizations. Warped Tour has always been such a cool place to expose
people, and especially a demographic that gets easily stoked on open ideas.
The creator of the tour, Kevin Lyman, set the DIY attitude and with hard
work anyone can grow and change and move forward.
The thing about Keep A Breast is that, while it’s heartbreaking if you
really think about it, every single person can tell you a story about how
breast cancer has affected their life. When I am able to meet people all
day long who have had personal experiences, it just reinforces that what
this foundation is doing is incredibly vital. The main question I get asked
over and over is if the money is going towards breast cancer research. And
while research is an important part of overcoming this terrible disease,
it’s important to look at it from a preventative angle. The disease will
only be eradicated and cease to exist if we start looking at the causes of
the disease. And that’s where a lot of the other non-profits, Rock For
Health, Warped Eco Initiative, you really start to see a crowd of young
people who want to change their life for the better.
The past few days on the tour have been great. We’ve had Sierra from Versa
Emerge come in to help do breast exams. Brian and Chris from Therefore I am
always stop by to talk about the importance of doing your BSE’s. We had an
awesome signing with Hit the Lights in Camden and they even took the time to
do a BSE with their tour manager Larry. Stay tuned for the video!
Nat from 30h!3 was awesome enough to stop by and interview me for Fuse about
Keep A Breast. We also taught viewers how to do a breast exam-Nat even
stripped his shirt off to give everyone an eyeful.
Every volunteer in every city has been so awesome-I’m so stoked on all the
different people I’ve been able to meet. We would never be able to
accomplish everything we do without the help of all our amazing volunteers.
Baptiste, our lovely volunteer from France, turned 21 a few days ago so I
made sure to dress him up in balloons and streamers. I told him that it¹s
customary for American¹s to dress like that on their birthday and Bap is too
much of a gentleman to argue with me.
We’re almost at the halfway point-so make sure you come out and say hi to
us!! Meeting people at the shows is absolutely my favorite part of the
tour!!
Xoxo
Katie
