Miss Nixon reports back from the 3 day walk

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Don’t you just love walking? How about walking 20 miles in one day? How about doing it the again the very next day? And the next? Well now that my nasty blisters have healed I’m ready to fill you in on my 60 mile 3-day walk (which took place this past November 21-23, 2008). My Team this year was called the Wild Wild Breasts.

This happens to be my 3rd year participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk and I do it for several reasons but my # 1 reason is that Susan G. Komen for the Cure uses the money raised from this walk to fund critical breast cancer research. Being diagnosed at 27 years old I had to endure a lot of medicine. I truly believe I am alive because of drugs made possible by this funding. Not to mention this walk is a blast. Seriously! Getting a round of applause to cross the street. A girl could really get used to that.

We started the walk Friday morning at Del Mar Fairgrounds and walked up Torrey Pines. I must mention that the San Jose Police Department volunteer their time each year to escort us all 60 miles. We supplied them with I HEART BOOBIES stickers and they were especially nice to us. Did they invite us to an after-party at their hotel? No, that must have been someone else!

Saturday started out foggy and chilly, but that didn’t slow us down. We walked through Pacific Beach and along Sunset Cliffs. What is up with the hills?

By Sunday morning I had to remind myself why I was walking.  In the U.S. one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes and every thirteen minutes one woman dies from breast cancer. That helped me put things into perspective and tape up my blisters and tie up my tennis shoes. The Juan Street Hill in Old Town was a challenge but by the time I reached closing ceremonies at Petco Park I had put that behind me. It was time to celebrate. I had the special honor of raising the last flag at the closing ceremonies that represents A WORLD WITHOUT BREAST CANCER. I believe this will happen in our lifetime so lets move forward together. Get out and be an advocate.

Courtney Rose makes a diffrence at Hanford High

Monday, December 15th, 2008

O Helloooo!!! :) My name is Courtney Rose and I am a friend of Keep A Breast. This October i was selling the “I <3 boobies” bracelets at my high school, Hanford High. I never thought that breast cancer awareness could come in such an eye catching and cute way that would appeal to all teenagers at my school. I received my first bracelet form my mom, and I thought that this would be a great way to help in spread the word to teens like myself about needing to check themselves for breast cancer. I started off with ten bracelets to sell at my school, and Oooo boy was I in for a surprise!!! I had NO IDEA the hit they would become! I sold out of the 10 bracelets in my first period class. It was so crazy how many people came up to me boys and girls that whole day asking for the bracelets and how many random text messages I was getting from people that I did not even know saying they wanted “I <3 boobies” bracelets. I was overwhelmed with the demand in the bracelets. I got a hundred more to sell at my school and sure enough by my third period the next day I had sold out again!! Since then I have sold over 200 bracelets to teenage kids at my school. Many girls did not even know that they should be checking themselves once a month already and just thought it was something that they needed to do when they were older; however, with KAB they were informed by the detailed pamphlets on why and how they need to do it. The boys did not even have a single clue that them too needed to check themselves because it is possible that they can also get breast cancer. My anatomy teacher at my high school even wanted to know about KAB and bought a bracelet and has the pamphlet on how to check yourself for breast cancer on his wall in his classroom, he thought it was a great way of spreading the word about breast cancer awareness. The matter of teens needing to be self aware for checking themselves for breast cancer has been spread around my school and my town and it’s hard to look around on my school campus and not see someone wearing an “I <3 boobies” bracelet. This fact is personally self fulfilling knowing that I made an impact on my peers and was able to aware them of breast cancer and the proper way in checking themselves. I encourage all teens to take part in this fabulous organization it could change peoples lives. :) Below are pictures of teens at my school and their “I <3 boobies” bracelets.

Love, Courtney Rose

Special Thanks to Spencers for donating the bracelets to KAB. To find out more about Spencers sponsored I Love Boobies bracelets click here. or buy them on our website here.

Keep A Breast Hawaii Presented By B-Ware, Emergen-C, ROXY and Keep A Breast

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Thank you to everyone who came out and made the Keep A Breast Hawaii event a huge success. Special thanks to the artists for donating their time and talents to paint the casts.

Word on the beach is this was the party of the winter up here on the North Shore. The bands rocked it and DJ Eskae held down the dancefloor as usual. Shouts to Pocket Full Of Monsters and The Ground Up Pirates who painted the massive 8′x12′ wall LIVE! Also thanks to Vitamin Water and Emergen-C for keeping the people hydrated. Most importantly, we were able to raise $2,000, not including sales of the breast casts, for The Rell Sunn Education Fund and Keep A Breast.

We are proud to be working with Wyland Galleries in Haleiwa, HI as the official seller of the K.A.B. Hawaii breast casts. Proceeds will go to The Rell Sunn Education Fund and Keep A Breast. The casts are now on display and available for sale at:

SITP – OC – FOX Headquarters 12/4/08

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Last night was the closing party for the Shot In The Pit traveling exhibition presented by Unite the United and Fox. It has been an amazing two months traveling around from coast to coast, showing these photographs and breast casts. I have worked with and met some of the most wonderful people and I am so thankful for all the hard work everyone has done to help make each and every show a success.

Last night we were stoked to have the show at the Fox HQ in Irvine, CA.  The Feelings Mutual , DJ Nathanetics and Halos entertained us all night.  The bands were amazing and DJ Nathanetics kept us on our toes all night long. The exhibition looked fabulous and many people were able to come check out the KAB traveling education booth and pick up their very own t-shirt, wristband & guitar pic necklace to show their support.

We have one more day of the auction and everything is going really well with it.
You can place your bid on all of the photographs, breast casts, Vans shoes and other memorabilia until 10am pst TODAY!!!

We have had a blast meeting all of you that came out to the SITP events and showed your support…we can’t thank you enough.

Stay healthy & check yourself,
